If I were but a big baboon

And lived within a zoo -

I’d want to live out in the world -

  Well, surely, so would you!

If I were but a big baboon

I’d flash my big red bum

And then sit on an old tree stump

And make a face that’s glum.

If I were but a big baboon

  I’d groom the other apes

And then I’d picnic with my friends

And make off with their grapes.

If I were but a big baboon

  I’d leap around my cage

And when I’m angry, just look out.

I’ll show my teeth in rage.

If I were but a big baboon

I’d be part of a troop

For living in the great outdoors,

  There’s safety in a group.

If I were a big baboon -

   My poems you’d never get

So I’ll stay human - yes I will -

And write more poems?  You bet!!!

Follow Up: Are any of the things which I've said in my poem true regarding baboons?  Find out all you can about them.  They're related to us you know, and so are the other primates.  What do you think about keeping them in a zoo?  Are they happy?  Josie
